4-time Olympians help launch USATF Development Camps June 10-11

INDIANAPOLIS -- Four-time Olympians Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Aretha Thurmond will help USATF launch its inaugural Development Camp, to be held June 10-11 at The University of Indianapolis.

Children age 9-18 will receive instruction from top certified USATF coaches in the areas of training, technique, competition and nutrition. The dynamic learning environment will address all disciplines in the sport, including sprints/hurdles, distance running, throwing and jumping as athletes learn from the team behind the USATF National Team.

“As the national governing body, USATF has access to the most accomplished coaches and athletes to feature at our camps,” USATF CEO Max Siegel said. “With our Development Camps, we are able to take our world-class expertise to the grass roots level to help educate and inspire the next generation of athletes. Indianapolis launches what will be a robust series of camps that will be a standard-bearer in the space of youth sports camps.”

Helping provide the inspiration are Joyner-Kersee and Thurmond. Named by Sports Illustrated as the greatest female athlete of the 20th century, Joyner-Kersee is a National Track & Field Hall of Famer and 3-time Olympic gold medalist. She has held the world record in the heptathlon for 28 years, having set it at the 1988 Olympic Games, and is a renowned inspirational speaker as well as a track clinician. Thurmond is a four-time Olympian, two-time Olympic track team captain and two-time Pan American games gold medalist. She currently serves as USATF Director of International Teams.

The national authority in coaching education, having educated more than 30,000 coaches, USATF enters the youth camp space for the first time. Camps will be added around the country over the next 18 months for outdoor track and field, cross country and indoor track and field.

The “Learn by Doing” camp is part of a busy June and July for USATF. On the heels of the Development Camp, USATF will join other Indianapolis-based national governing bodies in celebrating Olympic Day on June 24. As part of the Road to Rio celebration, USATF and its “A Movement to Move” campaign will celebrate the coming Olympic Games while encouraging Americans to get active through
