2018 USATF Youth Outdoor Championships Preview


ROCHESTER, New York -- College of Brockport is set to host the 2018 USATF Youth Outdoor Championships June 26 to July 1. Athletes ages 7-18 are eligible to compete and the event draws more than 1,300 participants, many of whom are returning competitors.

Benjamin Gambrell IV (Sayre, Pennsylvania/ USATF Mid-Atlantic) is the oldest returning champion. Last year he competed in the 13-14 division and won the triple jump with a leap of 11.10m/36-5. This year Gambrell is entered in the 15-16 division. He is seeded sixth in the long jump with a mark of 6.25m/20-6 and seventh in the triple jump with 12.04m/39-5.

Another returning title holder is Ahris Mayorga (San Bernardino, California/So Cal Roadrunners), who placed first the 1,500m race walk in the 9-10 division last year by clocking 8:13.10. Mayorga, remains in the 9-10 division and is entered to compete in the javelin, 1500m, and the 1500m race walk. He is the top seed for the 1500m race walk with a time of 7:50.13, over 20 seconds better than his winning time last year, as he looks to defend his title.

In addition, Otis Tre Harrison (Artesia, California/Pacific Coast Shock Waves) emerged victorious a year ago in the shot put 9-10 division. Harrison won with a throw of 8.21m/26-11.25. Now moving up to the 11-12 division, he is entered in the 100m, shot put, and discus. Harrison is the fifth seed for shot put and third in discus among his field.

Athletes from the Niagara association will make an effort to use their home track advantage to contend for national honors.  


In the three oldest girls divisions, Vanessa Watson (Rochester, New York/ Maximum Velocity TFC), Indya Richards (Rochester, New York/ Maximum Velocity TFC), Travasia Singletary (Rochester, New York/ Maximum Velocity TFC), Anaya Dees (Rochester, New York/ Maximum Velocity TFC) and Aniya McGhie (Rochester, New York/ Maximum Velocity TFC) will contend for titles in the sprints and vertical jump events. Watson comes in with the top seed in the 400m having run 53.20 earlier this year. Last week at the USATF Junior Championships in Bloomington, Indiana, she finished fifth in the 400m hurdles running 57.77, the third fastest scholastic time in 2018. Richards will contend for national titles in the 100m hurdles and triple jump; events that she comes into the meet with the top entry marks. Singletary enters the competition with the leading mark in the long jump in the 17-18 girls division.

In the 15-16 division Dees is the first seed in both the long jump and triple jump. McGhie is the holds the fastest 100m time and the second farthest leap in the long jump in the 13-14 division. In the pole vault Laura Reigle (Hilton, New York/ USATF Niagara) in the 13-14 girls division and Kate Doherty (Orchard Park, New York/USATF Niagara) in the 15-16 girls division both have the top seeds. Jada Kenner (Buffalo, New York/Just Blaze TC) is the top seed in the 11-12 girls division 100m and 200m.


In the boy’s competition Rhoan Kaulder II (Rochester, New York/Maximum Velocity TFC) will look to add to his growing resume of national accolades. While still only in the 9-10 division Kaulder has already won four national titles in his young career. He will compete as the top seed in the 100m, 200m, and long jump in his hometown. In the 17-18 division Jaquil Baxter (Rochester, New York/Maximum Velocity TFC) and Jake McPherson (West Henrietta, New York/ USATF Niagara) are entered in the 200m and discus throw, respectively.

Admission tickets to the USATF Youth National Youth Outdoor Championships are available for purchase online at a discounted price: single day tickets are $9.00 and all session pass is $36.00. Onsite and online admission tickets costs will be $8.00 per day and $40 minimum for all session pass.
