7/28/2016

FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas-- Fourteen athletes will represent the United States at the 2016 Thorpe Cup in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on July 29-30. The competition between Team USA and Germany will feature some of each nation’s top decathletes and heptathletes.

All seven of Team USA’s competitors on the women’s side competed at the Olympic Trials earlier this month, with Chantae McMillan having the highest finish among those on the Thorpe Cup roster. McMillan (Rolla, Missouri) placed fifth at the meet, only 76 points away from earning a spot on the 2016 Olympic Team. She finished third at Trials in 2012 and represented the United States at the London Games.

Annie Kunz, Lindsay Schwartz and Lindsay Lettow head into the competition with Germany after top-10 finishes at Olympic Trials. Kunz (Wheat Ridge, Colorado), a senior at Texas A&M, broke the school’s heptathlon record at Trials with 6,038 points for eighth place.

This will be the third consecutive Thorpe Cup appearance for Schwartz (Watertown, Wisconsin) as she heads into the meet after finishing ninth at Trials. A University of Central Missouri graduate, Lettow (Urbandale, Iowa) earned a top-10 finish at Olympic Trials both in 2012 and in 2016. She recently placed fifth at 2015 USATF Outdoor Championships.

On the men’s side of competition, Solomon Simmons (Murrieta, California) leads the decathlon after placing in sixth place at Olympic Trials earlier this month. A recent graduate of Eastern Michigan University, Simmons specializes in track events, finishing second in the 400 meters and 110m hurdles in his respective heat. Simmons finished with a point total of 7,829.

Along with Simmons, the remaining six competitors competed at Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon, including Mitch Modin, Austin Bahner and Scott Filip, all of whom placed within the top-10 at the meet. Filip (Bloomingdale, Illinois), a graduate of Rice University, is a two-time All-American in the event, placing eighth at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Harrison Williams (Memphis, Tennessee), holds the Stanford University outdoor decathlon record of 7,806 points after breaking the record twice in his freshman season. The record was previously held by Olympic gold-medalist Bob Mathias, a record that was set in 1952. Williams also holds the U.S. junior decathlon record after totaling 8,037 points at the 2015 Pan Am Junior Championships.

The 2016 Thorpe Cup action between the United States and Germany will take place in Fayetteville, Arkansas from July 29-30, with the opening ceremony at 4:45 p.m., followed by the start of the women’s decathlon. USATF.TV will have on demand coverage of the two-day championship. Fans can follow along with the Thorpe Cup on social media by following USATF on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.
