Sharon Day-Monroe named USATF Athlete of the Week

2/26/2014

INDIANAPOLIS -- Sharon Day-Monroe (Los Angeles) wins USA Track & Field Athlete of the week honors after setting an American record in women’s pentathlon Friday, Feb. 21 at USA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque. With the win, she also claimed her third straight title in the event and sits 12th all-time in the indoor women’s pentathlon.

“Everything was at least solid if not really good,” said Day-Monroe of her efforts at USA Indoors.  “Starting with a PR in the hurdles, my best high jump ever, a huge PR in shot, a solid long jump and a solid 800, I think it all went really well.”

Day-Monroe scored 4805, breaking the 4753 mark previously held by both DeDee Nathan and Hyleas Fountain. Day-Monroe set a personal best of 8.44 in the 60-meter hurdles, and she cleared 1.88m/6-2 in high jump before throwing 15.59/51-1.75 in the shot put and leaping to 6.09m/19-11.75 in the long jump. In the final event, she needed a 2:16.87 finish in the 800m for the record, which she ultimately claimed, crossing easily in 2:13.19.

“It feels really good to be named USATF Athlete of the Week,” said Day-Monroe. “It means a lot knowing that all of the previous Athletes of the Week are amazing. To be like or mentioned with some of those people, it’s pretty amazing.”

Sharon Day-Monroe’s next competition will be at IAAF World Indoor Championships in Sopot, Poland, March 7-9.

Now in its 13th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on www.usatf.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
