200 runners descend upon Caumsett State Park for 50 km Championships

2/28/2014

INDIANAPOLIS -- Caumsett State Park in Huntington, N.Y., will serve as host to the 50 km Road Championships Saturday for the ninth consecutive time as more than 200 runners are expected to finish the looped course on a route comprised of moderate hills rolling through property formerly owned by Marshall Field’s family.

Elite competitors Mike Wardian (Arlington, Va.), who holds the race record at 2:55:05, and Joseph Gray (Newcastle, Wash.) are expected to lead the men’s run. Wardian returns as a four-time champion, who won in consecutive years from 2008-11. Gray hopes to claim his third straight title after narrowly missing the mark in 2013 by a mere 15 seconds, finishing in 2:55:20. His 2012 victory time was 2:56:43.

Emily Harrison (Flagstaff, Ariz.) sets the women’s standard as she is likely to challenge Jodi Schoppmann's 2011 race record of 3:20:12. Tracy Meder (Stow, Ohio), also a favorite to finish top-two, took second place in 2012 with her time of 3:47:10.

The course, which features scenic views of Long Island Sound, mansions and horse stables, saw 180 finishers in 2013. The total potential payout of $50,000 includes both prize money and bonuses for breaking records.

Race results will be available on USATF.org
