Martin Sets Eighth Career American Record on Second Day of USA Masters Championships

3/15/2014

BOSTON, Mass. – Twelve American records and three world records were broken on the second day of the USA Masters Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center on the campus of Roxbury Community College.

Kathy Martin (Northport, N.Y.) was impressive as always, etching her name in the masters record books for her fourth world record and eighth American record. Martin won the W60 mile in 5:47.25, easily surpassing Marie Michelsohn’s previous world record of 6:02.49, set in 2003.

The runner-up in the W60 mile, Barbara Broad (Pepper Pike, Ohio), also transcended the existing world mark, crossing in 5:59.56.

The men’s mile was equally entertaining, as Inocencio Cantu (Richmond, Texas) broke the existing world record in the M80 mile, winning the national title in 6:42.10 and besting the previous time by more than six seconds.

In the women’s 4x800-meter relay for the W50-54 age group, the quartet of Kathleen Shook, Julie Hayden, Claudette Gronendaal and Lorraine Jasper shattered the existing world mark with a time of 10:24.90. The previous record of 10:32.67 was set by the Canadians in 2013.
