Francena McCorory named USATF Athlete of the Week

3/13/2014

NDIANAPOLIS -- Francena McCorory wins USA Track & Field Athlete of the Week after two gold-medal-winning performances at the 14th IAAF World Indoor Track & Field Championships in Sopot, Poland.

"There were some incredible performances at Worlds,” said McCorory. "I'm so honored to have been chosen for Athlete of the Week. There is nothing like representing your country."

McCorory (Hampton, Va.) competed in the 400 and the 4x400m relay in Poland. She captured the women’s 400m title when she made her move in the final 100m, finishing in 51.12. With this finish, she earned the fifth Team USA gold at World Indoors, and became the third consecutive American to win the 400m title.

Her success continued with the 4x400m relay team of Natasha Hastings (Round Rock, Texas), Joanna Atkins (Minneloa, Fla.) and international newcomer Cassandra Tate (Baton Rouge, La.). McCorory blew the race wide open on the third leg, running 50.36, helping the U.S. women to a new American Record of 51.67. The previous AR was 3:27.34 set in 2010 at Doha. The 4x400m victory in Sopot was the first of two American relays to find themselves in the record books.

"I have to share (Athlete of the Week) with the other ladies on the 4x4. Without them, this weekend wouldn't have been nearly as special.”

McCorory has also earned relay gold as a member of the U.S. women's 4x4 at both the 2011 World Outdoor Championships and 2012 Olympic Games.

2014 Winners: January 15, Chris Derrick; January 22, Galen Rupp; January 29, Galen Rupp; February 5, Alexa Efraimson; February 12, Mike Rutt; Feb. 19, Bernard Lagat; Feb. 26, Sharon Day-Monroe; March 3, David Torrence; March 13, Francena McCorory.
