Meet Team USA - Mary Saxer

3/9/2014

SOPOT, Poland -- Remember this name: Mary Saxer. The 2014 U.S. Champion in the women’s pole vault, Saxer has had an impressive 18 months. After competing over 30 times in 2013, Saxer has prepped herself for the next Olympic cycle with one goal in mind: Rio.

Saxer comes into Sopot with the hope of making the medal stand. Having fallen just short of making the Olympic team in 2012 and the World Outdoors team in 2013, she is focused on making a name for herself on the international level.

Saxer dethroned reigning world record holder Jenn Suhr at the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships, clearing a personal best 4.71m/15-5.50. While Saxer says Suhr didn’t have her best day, she relished the moment and understood the significance of what winning a national title could do for her confidence and standing in the sport.

Saxer is an easy one to cheer for. One of the most affable athletes in the sport, she swears by her ritual: wearing pink. Sporting a pink Notre Dame wristband and pink fingernails for each competition, she believes in her routines but knows they don’t outmatch the dedication she has to her craft. A self-proclaimed small-town girl, Saxer lives in Boston to train and her family and friends are not far from her mind. It’s all worth it for her dreams of the 2016 Olympics.

She understands what the next two years have in store and the importance of her performance here in Sopot but Saxer is sure not to put too much pressure on herself. A veteran of this young American team in Sopot, Saxer has been sure to enjoy herself as well. Taking in all this beautiful European city has to offer, she has struck the perfect balance of seeing the sights and focusing on her training.

It’s been almost a week since Team USA arrived in Sopot and Saxer is ready for her time in front of the sell-out crowd at Ergo Arena. Cheering on all of her teammates this week, it is finally Saxer’s chance for the spotlight. She is ready for what the next two years will bring, and it all begins in Sopot.
