Seen and Heard with Team USA in Sopot

3/5/2014

SOPOT — A few days in Sopot and the athletes and staff are finally getting into a routine. After mad dashes through airports across the U.S. competing against weather delays, Team USA is settled in Sopot and ready to begin competition Friday.

The team hotel is impressive to say the least, sitting on the edge of the Baltic Sea. Walk right outside and you hit a running trail/biking path that takes you to Monte Cassino in less than 15 minutes. Go a few steps past the trail and you’re on the beach. Careful about feeding the ever-present pigeons and geese, though. As one little boy found out yesterday, it’s easier to drop the bag of bread and run.

Sopot’s city center is a bustling marketplace with plenty of vendors and restaurants. The signs for Sopot 2014 are EVERYWHERE and if you’re wearing anything with an American flag, the locals stop you and say how happy they are for you to be here. There is nothing cold about Sopot, except the breeze from the Baltic and the skating rink in the middle of Monte Cassino.

One of things Sopot is known for is the Krzywy Domek, aka the little crooked house. It’s part of the Rezydent shopping center and has shops and cafes inside.

The U.S. media began arriving in Sopot Wednesday with a multitude of interviews and the IAAF press conference scheduled for Thursday. The staff is as ready for the competition to start as are the athletes. Two days to go!
