INDIANAPOLIS — Prince George’s County Sports and Learning Complex will host more than 1,600 young athletes when the 4th USA Youth Indoor Track & Field Championships begin Friday, March 7.  Fans all over the U.S. will be able to watch with unprecedented live broadcast coverage on USATF.tv starting at 9 a.m., ET both Saturday and Sunday, March 8-9 in Landover, Md.

Shot put athletes Cameren Anderson (Somerset, N.J.), Dylan Carter (Maryville, Tenn.) and middle and long distance runner Gabrielle Wilkinson (Philadelphia, Pa.) return in the company of 44 other 2012 national champions.

Anderson (Somerset, N.J.), who won the 8-and-under boys shot put with a throw of 5.57m/18-03.25 at last year’s indoors, beat the closest competition by nearly five feet as Carter dominated the boys 11-12 shot put with his 13.91m/45-07.75, surpassing the previous record of 12.73 by more than a meter. Carter’s 2012 indoor mark was also an impressive three meters clear of the next closest competitor.

Wilkinson shined among 13-14-year-old girls in the 800m, where she ran away from the field, finishing in 2:16.98 to set an American youth age-group indoor record and improving her personal best by nearly 10 seconds. Wilkinson also holds four youth age-group indoor records.

Other notable female athletes to watch are Kendal Drewery in girls 11-12 long jump and 55-meter hurdles, Kara Mumford and Mary Thorp in 9-10 age-group high jump, Allyn Tyer in the 12-14 pole vault and Lauryn Heskin in the 800m and 1500m runs for 9-10-year-olds. A top boys athlete on the radar is Rashad Manning in the 15-16 shot put.

Developed in 2004 with Zone Championships, indoor competitions provide young athletes a competitive opportunity to remain active and tune-up during the winter months. They are also a great component to USATF’s already successful Junior Olympic program which currently includes outdoor Track and Field and Cross Country.

Entry into the 2014 USA Youth Indoor Track & Field Championship is based on performance and advancement through Zone Championships. Top six (6) finishers in each event at the Zone Championships qualify for participation in the National Championships. Competition takes place in six two-year age divisions, with athletes generally falling between the ages of 7 and 18.
