The following procedures will be used to select athletes:

  1. One team position per gender will be selected based on the rank order finish from among the top three finishers at the 2017 USATF Half Marathon Championships on April 29, 2017, with remaining positions to be filled as per the processes outlined below in paragraphs 2 and 3, respectively. Should no athlete from among the top three finishers at the 2017 USATF Half Marathon Championships accept this U.S. Team position, the selection of that position will then revert to the processes outlined below in paragraphs 2 and 3 below, respectively. The accepting athlete from the 2017 USATF Half Marathon Championships must demonstrate an adequate fitness level in the window of September 1, 2017 to January 24, 2018 by a top-10 finish at a USATF LDR Championship or a time standard equivalent of the same from the Mercier list on a certified course.

NOTE: Selection of athletes via the 2017 USATF Half Marathon Championships is provisional and subject to their demonstration of fitness during the aforementioned timeframe. After accepting a position on the team, should the selected athlete decide to withdraw or fail to show fitness, the subsequent replacement shall be selected by use of the Mercier lists.

  1. One team position per gender will be selected based on the rank order finish from among the top three finishers at the 2017 USATF 20 km Championships on September 4, 2017, with remaining positions to be filled per the process outlined below in paragraph 3. Should no athlete from among the top three finishers in each race at the 2017 USATF 20 km Championships accept this U.S. Team position, the selection of that position will then revert to the process outlined below in paragraph 3.

  1. The remaining positions will be selected based on rank order from the combination of half marathon and 20 km performances, as determined by use of the Mercier lists, from USATF Certified courses, in events sanctioned by USA Track & Field or a member federation of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). The course must be USATF/IAAF/AIMS certified with an active course certification and have an elevation loss no greater than 3.25 meters/km. All course configurations will be accepted (no minimum separation) between September 1, 2017 and January 21, 2018.

  1. The deadline for selection, which will include receipt of National Team paperwork, will be 5:00 p.m. ET on January 24, 2018.

  1. Alternates: Alternates will select themselves following the above procedures and be named to the team if a drop-out occurs prior to a final date set by the Men’s or Women’s Long Distance Running Chair in consultation with the National Office Staff.

  1. Alteration: USATF reserves the right, based on consultation with the USOC and the State Department to alter the conditions of travel for this team trip or to cancel the trip if conditions in the host country warrant.

Removal of Athletes

An athlete who has been accepted to the team by USATF may be removed from membership on the team for any of the following reasons, as determined by USATF:

  1. Voluntary withdrawal: Athlete must submit a written letter via e-mail to Kimberly Sims, Manager of International Teams at Kimberly.Sims@usatf.org

  1. Violation of the USATF Athlete Statement of Conditions.

  1. Involuntary Withdrawal: An Athlete who is named to the team by virtue of an error or oversight (by USATF) may be removed from the team at any time.
