Athlete Selection Procedures

Selection Event
The 2017 USATF Junior Track & Field Championships (the “Selection Event”) will be held June 22 – 24, 2017 in Sacramento, CA, and will serve as the selection meet for the 2017 Pan American Junior Championships (the “Pan Am Junior Championships”). The Championships will be held on July 21 – July 23, 2017 in Trujillo, Peru.
 
Eligibility Criteria for the U.S. Team
In order to be eligible to be a member of the USATF’s Pan Am Junior Championships team (the “Team”), or an alternate, an athlete must:
 

  • Be a citizen of the United States and, under USATF and IAAF rules, eligible to represent the USA at all levels of international competition.

  • Be a USA Track & Field member in good standing at the time of the selection through the end of the Pan Am Junior Championships.

  • Possess a valid passport that does not expire within six months of the Championships (and must be able to present their passport or a copy of passport at team processing (when applicable).

  • Sign a USATF Athlete Statement of Conditions for participation.

 
Track & Field Selection Criteria
For each individual event on the Pan Am Junior Championships program of events, up to two (2) athletes per event will select themselves for the Team through head-to-head competition at the 2017 USATF Junior Championships, provided that they finish in the top 8 in their event. In addition to athletes being selected in individual events, USATF will also select up to two (2) additional athletes for each relay team/pool (men’s and women’s 4 x 100 and 4x 400), with this selection to be based on competitive considerations.

The events that will be contested at the Pan Am Junior Championships are:

Men’s Track:

100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, 3000St, 5000, 10,000, 110H, 400H, 10kRW

Men’s Field:

HJ, PV, LJ, TJ, SP, DT, HT, JT, Decathlon

Women’s Track:

100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, 3000St, 3000, 5000, 100H, 400H, 10kRW

Women’s Field:

HJ, PV, LJ, TJ, SP, DT, HT, JT, Heptathlon

Men’s Relays:

4x100, 4x400

Women’s Relays:

4x100, 4x400

 
Athletes will select themselves for a position on the Team based on the rank order of place finish among the top 8 place finishers in each individual event at the 2017 USATF Junior Championships as follows:
 

  1. In all events at the Championships, the rank order for selection will be based on the place finish in the final of that event.

  2. In each event, if an athlete declines to participate on the Team, USATF will offer that position to the next highest ranked individual meeting all criteria continuing in this order until the two positions for each event are filled from the top 8 place finishers only.

  3. There are no qualifying standards for the Pan Am Junior Championships.

 
Age Requirements
The Pan Am Junior Championships are an age group event, which follows the IAAF regulations on the age of competitors.

NOTE:  While athletes aged 14 and 15 years of age may compete at the 2017 USATF Junior Championships, only athletes who are 16 to 19 years of age may qualify to compete at the 2017 Pan American Junior Championships. 
 
The regulations for the Pan Am Junior Championships are as follows:

  1. An athlete aged 18 or 19 years on December 31, 2017 (born in 1999 or 1998) may compete in any event.

  2. An athlete aged 16 or 17 years on December 31, 2017 (born in 2000 or 2001) may compete in any event. However, the maximum number of events in which an athlete in this age category can compete is two individual events plus one relay. If the two individual events are Track events, only one of these may be longer than 200m.

  3. No athlete younger than 16 years of age on December 31, 2017 (born in 2001 or earlier) may be entered.

  4. No athlete older than 19 years of age (who will turn 20 at any time in 2017) may be entered.

 
Removal of Athletes
An athlete who is to be nominated to the team by USATF may be removed as a nominee for any of the following reasons, as determined by USATF:
 

  1. Voluntary withdrawal: An athlete may choose to decline a position on the team, should they become eligible, by completing the necessary paper work during team processing at the Selection Event. Should an athlete choose to withdraw subsequent to the Selection Event, they may do so by submitting a written letter via e-mail to Kimberly Sims, Manager of International Teams at Kimberly.Sims@usatf.org.

  2. Injury or illness as certified by a physician (or medical staff) approved by USATF:  If an athlete refuses verification of his/her illness or injury by a physician (or medical staff) approved by USATF, his/her injury will be assumed to be disabling and he/she may be removed.

  3. Violation of the USATF Athlete Statement of Conditions.

  4. Involuntary Withdrawal: An Athlete who is named to the team by virtue of an error or oversight (by USATF) may be removed from the team at any time.
