USA Team Selection Procedures

 
1.      Selection to the USA Team for the 2015 Pan American Race Walk Cup (Hereafter called the Cup) will be based on the rank order of finish in the Pan Am Cup Trials competitions (hereafter called the Trials). The Trials competition for the men's 50 km shall be on 14 December, 2014 in Santee, California.  The Trials competition for the men's and women's open 20 km and the junior men’s and junior women’s 10k, on 12 April, 2015, in Whiting, N.J.

2.      Athletes will select themselves to the Cup team according to place of finish in the Trials and by meeting the performance standards established.  These standards must be met during the established qualifying period and will only be recognized if achieved in under “Record Eligible Conditions” (see Rule #266).  The qualifying period for the Cup is 15 September 2013 (day of 2013 30K Ch) thru 15 March 2015 for the 50K; 12 April, 2015 for 20K and 10K.  There will no chasing of qualifying times after this date. 
 
3.      The standards are:

Men 50 km - 4:45:00
Men 20 km - 1:36:00

Women 20 km - 1:48:00
Junior Men 10 km – 50:00
Junior Women 10 km – 54:30


4.      Athletes must declare their desire to compete on the Cup team no later than midnight on Tuesday, 14 April, 2015. All athletes who complete a Trials race and meet the standards in #3 are eligible and encouraged to declare. If an athlete has met the qualifying standard during the qualifying period at more than one distance then the athlete is additionally required to declare the distance at which they would prefer to compete. They should also indicate whether they would be willing to compete in the other distance if not selected for their preferred distance. If an athlete does not indicate a preferred distance, then the longer distance will be assumed to be the preferred distance.

5.      When declaring their intent to compete the athletes must notify the Chair of the Race Walk Committee, Ron Daniel  (860) 669–9008, or via email  <rondaniel@sbcglobal.net>   (Deadlines SEE Above).  The chair will acknowledge via email receipt of the athletes intent to compete and the distance the athlete has declared for.

6.      In naming the teams, the chair will first go down the list of declared athletes at each distance and in rank order of finish in the Trials assign the first five (5) qualified athletes to the senior team for that distance and first three (3) qualified juniors of each gender to the junior team for that gender. 

7.      If, after step #6, an athlete is on more than one roster, then the chair will, in accordance with athlete’s preferences established thru step #4, replace the athlete at the non-preferred distance with the next declared and qualified athlete, if any, using the rank order of trials finish at the non-preferred distance.  

8.      Any situation that is unable to be resolved using these steps will be resolved by the Chair, in consultation with the affected athletes and the Executive Committee. The resulting rosters will be named to the Cup team.

9.      If, after going through the steps above, any team has fewer than five (5) named members (three for juniors), the chair may, at his discretion, name additional athletes to that team.  This shall be done with the approval of the Executive Committee and may only be done when primary consideration is given to rank order of finish at the Trials.  However, there is no requirement to send full, or even partial, teams to the Cup competition.

10.  Athletes named to the team are required to maintain fitness and prepare properly for the Cup’s travel and competition.   An athlete is required to report any situation that may affect the athlete’s ability to travel and compete to the team’s head coach in a timely fashion.

11.  If any athlete withdraws from a team after being named to it, but before midnight on April 14, 2015, the chair shall use the procedures outlined in the steps above to name a replacement athlete. If an athlete withdraws after midnight on April 15th no replacement shall be named unless the Chair in consultation with the Race Walk Executive Committee and USATF National Office Staff determines that doing so is in the best interests of the team. If they so determine, the Chair shall, in consultation with the Executive Committee, name the replacement.
