American indoor 400m record holder (50.54)
In 2014 McCorory finally captured a national title by taking gold at the USA Indoor Championships. She parlayed that success into her first individual international gold with a 400m at the World Indoor Championships in Sopot. The 2013 season saw McCorory narrowly miss out -- yet again -- on gold at the USA Outdoor Championships. Her time of 50.01 was good enough for silver, her third 400m silver medal in the past four years. Displaying natural talent from a young age, McCorory established the American indoor 400m record in 2010 at the age of 22 and the next year made the 2011 World Outdoor Championships final, in the process qualifying for her first Olympic Team in 2012 where she went on to win gold as a member of the 4x400m team. McCorory's 2010 record run won her second straight NCAA title competing for Hampton University. The time eclipsed Diane Dixon's 19-year-old record of 50.64, set in 1991. It also surpassed Natasha Hastings collegiate record of 50.80 from 2007. McCorory has eight siblings, and still lives and trains in her hometown of Hampton, Va., with her college coach. She majored in psychology and plans to become a mortician and own several funeral homes.
