Director of Coaching
Terry Crawford began her role as director of coaching in the summer of 2009. It was a newly created position to provide a liason to the coaching community from the USA Track & Field national office and to develop coaching initiatives from grass roots to the elite level.
Crawford brought 35 years of college coaching experience to USATF along with being an active member. Crawford previously served as head track and field coach at Tennessee (1973-84), the University of Texas (1984-92) and Cal Poly State University (1992-2009) before coming to USATF. She also headed the 1998 women’s Olympic team, Pan American squad and World University team.
As a high school student before Title IX, Crawford gained her first experience in track and field as a college freshman as a part of the Knoxville Track Club. A former member of the USATF Board of Directors and the chair of the Coaches Advisory Committee, Crawford also served as President of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association and one term as the organization’s president of the Division I coaches. As an athlete, Crawford competed in the Pan American Games and World University Games as a middle distance runner.
A native of Tennessee, Crawford received a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Tennessee in 1970 and a master’s degree in exercise physiology in 1972.
Crawford resides in San Luis Obispo, Calif., and spends her work time between the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center and the national office in Indianapolis. She remains a strong fan and supporter of the Tennessee Volunteers and Lady Vols.
